Storm restoration across Nassau County

Nassau County sits on Florida's northeast Atlantic coast, with Amelia Island as a barrier island directly exposed to storm surge from Atlantic-track hurricanes. Hurricane Dora (1964) struck the First Coast with 125 mph winds and surge reaching 10 feet above mean sea level, sweeping homes on Amelia Island, eroding Fort Clinch, and destroying or damaging more than 550 structures countywide. Hurricane Irma (2017) caused record inland flooding along the St. Johns River system and produced flood-stage conditions across the county, with one fatality attributed locally. Beyond surge on the coast, the county faces significant inland freshwater flooding along the Nassau and St. Marys river corridors, high-wind exposure across its wide unincorporated rural interior, and tornado spin-up risk from landfalling and bypassing tropical systems.
