Tazewell County sits in the heart of central Illinois's severe weather corridor, averaging roughly 75 tornado touchdowns since 1950 - most notably the November 17, 2013 EF4 that leveled 633 homes and caused over $800 million in damage to Washington alone, and a July 15, 2024 derecho that spawned an EF1 tornado tracking 12 miles from East Peoria through Morton toward Mackinaw while delivering straight-line gusts measured at 111 mph near Dunlap. Large hail events routinely accompany supercells tracking northeast across the Illinois River valley, with hailstones exceeding 2.5 inches recorded during derecho events.
